A confrontation between a living actor and his or her projected image is an encounter of two differently coded readings of perspective. The perspective experienced by the viewer in front of the projection screen, represents the victory of illusionistic tricks played upon the senses of perception over the limited perspective of physical architecture. A film viewer can seemingly experience any kind of perspective by empathizing with the images onscreen. The theater, on the other hand, with all its mechanisms for "creating" space, has no choice but to bring dimensions in concord with the natural size of the human figure. Empathizing with the dancer onstage is a matter of other cognitive registers than is identifying screened images. It may seem for a moment that the perspectival axis extending from physical space into the space projected onscreen could bring about an encounter between two inexorably separate worlds, the filmed one and the existing one. But such an encounter is only possible with the help of the third illusion, which is determined by the viewer's perception. In a time when the screen image is prevalent it is not very hard to predict which reading will prevail. Or is it? (Source: Egon March Institute at YouTube)
